From Dry and Tangled to Soft and Healthy. A Real Salon Story

As a hair stylist, one of the most common questions I hear from clients is simple.
“My hair is so dry. What should I do?”

Most people think they need expensive treatments or salon products. From my experience, that is not the real solution. The real answer is having the right daily routine.

Let me share a true story from my salon.

One day, a client came in with her young daughter, around eight years old. The girl had very fine hair that tangled easily and always looked dry. I told her mother something that surprised her. I said to treat her hair like skin and use hair lotion every day.

Her mother immediately asked if that would make the hair look greasy. She was right to question it. If you apply lotion on dry hair, it will look oily and heavy. That is where most people make a mistake.

The correct way is to apply hair lotion on damp hair, right after towel drying. Not soaking wet, not fully dry. Just slightly damp. This allows the hair to absorb moisture properly without leaving a greasy finish.

I also gave her a simple routine to follow. Wash the hair every other day. One day use shampoo, the next day rinse with warm water only. After each wash, apply hair lotion on towel-dried damp hair. Brush the hair gently twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening.

Six months later, she came back with her daughter. I immediately noticed a huge difference. The hair was no longer tangled. It felt soft, smooth, and much healthier. The mother told me she followed the routine every single day without skipping. That routine hair treatment is my common recommendation for my clients, but most of them don’t follow it because it’s easy to forget, and many people simply don’t have time. I was surprised that she actually did it, and it worked.

That moment confirmed something I always believed. Consistency is more powerful than expensive products. This routine is not just for children. Adults with dry, fragile, or damaged hair can benefit the same way. Hair that has been affected by sun, swimming pool chlorine, or chemical processing needs simple and consistent care, not complicated treatments.

If you like to style your hair with waves or curls, there is also a healthier option. Instead of using a blow dryer or curling iron every day, try a roller set with a hood dryer. This method helps maintain moisture and reduces long-term heat damage.

Another question I often hear is about shampoo. There are many types available such as moisturizing shampoo, dry shampoo, deep cleansing shampoo, and chlorine shampoo. This can be confusing, but the answer is actually simple.

For everyday use, a basic and gentle shampoo is the best choice. Avoid strong fragrances and overly heavy formulas.

Moisturizing shampoo can be used occasionally, especially at the salon, but using it all the time may cause buildup and make the scalp itchy. Dry shampoo is convenient, but it does not truly clean the hair. It only covers oil and stays on your scalp until you wash it out. Deep cleansing shampoo is too strong for regular use and should only be used if you wash your hair very infrequently.

If you swim in a pool, it is important to use a chlorine shampoo immediately after. After washing, towel dry your hair, apply lotion to the hair only, and brush it through evenly. Avoid applying lotion directly to the scalp. Here is a hair lotion I personally recommend from Amazon. It’s not only for damaged or dry hair, but also great for maintaining healthy hair.Small habits make a big difference. Apply products to the hair, not the scalp. Brush gently and regularly. Keep your routine simple and consistent.

Below are four leave-in conditioners (hair lotions) that I highly recommend, along with their Amazon links. Two are fragrance-free, and two have a pleasant, light scent. I hope this helps save your time when searching for the right product on Amazon.

There is one last tip I want to share from a stylist’s point of view. When you come in for a haircut, try not to wear a hoodie. Hoodies make it difficult to create an even cut, especially for long hair. If you do wear one, it helps to have a T-shirt underneath so you can remove it easily.

Healthy hair does not come from expensive treatments. It comes from daily habits. With the right routine and consistency, you can completely change the condition of your hair.
