How I Opened My Own Hair Salon With Only $1,000 (Inside a Senior Apartment)
Starting a hair salon in the United States can be very expensive. Many hairstylists think they need at least $10,000–$50,000 to open their own place.
But in my case, I opened my own salon with about $1,000.
And the best part?
I opened it inside a senior independent living apartment community.
This idea changed my career.
The Problem: Expensive Salon Rent
When hairstylists want their own space, they often rent a suite.
Places like Sola Salon or My Salon Suite usually cost around $1,200–$1,500 per month depending on the city.
For many stylists, that rent is very stressful—especially when you don’t have enough clients yet.
I wanted my own salon, but I didn’t want to take a big financial risk.
So I started looking for another way.
The Idea: Senior Apartment Salon
Across the United States, there are many independent senior living apartments.
Some communities have:
100 units
150 units
sometimes even more
Most residents are seniors who live independently but still want convenient services—especially haircuts, shampoo, blow dry, perms, and color.
Many of these apartments have a small salon space inside the building that they rent to hairstylists.
When I discovered this, I realized something important:
The clients are already living in the building.
I don’t need to find customers.
They are already there waiting for a hairstylist.
The Rent Is Much Cheaper
This is the biggest advantage.
For example:
Typical salon suite: about $1,500 per month
Senior apartment salon: about $565 per month
That is less than half the price.
There are also other benefits.
In my case:
Towels can be washed and dried for free
The salon space is about four times bigger than many salon suites
The work environment is quiet and comfortable
This makes running a business much easier.
Loyal Clients Every Week
Many senior residents come regularly.
Typical services include:
Shampoo and blow dry
Shampoo and roller set
Haircuts
Hair color
Perms
Some clients come every week.
Senior clients are also very loyal. Once they trust you, they continue coming back for years.
Many of them treat you like family—almost like their own children.
For someone who enjoys working with seniors, this is a very rewarding environment.
Flexible Work Schedule
Another great benefit is the flexible schedule.
Senior communities usually have set meal times for lunch and dinner.
So a perfect schedule might look like this:
10:00 AM – 12:00 PM work
12:00 PM – 2:00 PM break (their lunch time)
2:00 PM – 5:00 PM work
You automatically get a two-hour break every day.
You can choose to work:
5 days a week
or even 7 days if you want
It’s a very healthy work-life balance.
Extra Income: Selling Products
You can also sell hair products.
Once your clients trust you, they often ask:
"What shampoo should I use?"
"Do you have something for dry hair?"
You can recommend products and sell them directly to your clients.
This creates extra income in addition to hair services.
You Can Still Bring Outside Clients
Another advantage is that you can bring your own clients.
If they are seniors, they usually love coming to the apartment community because it is:
easy to park
comfortable
senior-friendly
So your business can grow both ways:
apartment residents
outside senior clients
You Can Even Hire Another Stylist
As your salon grows, you can also hire another hairstylist to work with you.
This turns your small salon into a team business.
You can also promote your salon on:
Facebook groups
Instagram
TikTok
This helps more seniors discover your salon.
My Honest Advice
If you are a hairstylist who wants to open a salon but doesn’t have a lot of money, this can be an amazing opportunity.
Especially if you enjoy working with seniors.
For me, opening a salon inside a senior apartment community was one of the best business decisions I ever made.
Sometimes the best opportunities are not the most expensive ones.
Sometimes they are simply the ones most people don’t know about yet.
Another great benefit is that the senior apartment manager will help promote your salon to the residents. They often announce the new hairstylist in newsletters, community boards, or resident meetings. Because of this, people in the building quickly learn about your salon and start coming to you.
